Observation of Superluminal Pulse Propagation in Alexandrite

Abstract

We observe superluminal light propagation in an alexandrite crystal. Negative group velocities result from a narrow anti-hole in the homogeneously broadened absorption spectrum. The anti-hole is formed by coherent population oscillations in an inverse-saturable absorber.
