Physical mechanism for apparent superluminality in barrier tunneling

Abstract

The apparent superluminal tunneling of wavepackets through photonic bandgaps and other barriers is shown to be a quasi-static process in which the envelope of the input pulse modulates the amplitude of a standing wave.
