Abstract

Modern nanofabrication techniques enable the construction of sub-micron dielectric and semiconductor nanostructures in which near-field effects strongly affect the macroscopic optical properties–including birefringence, resonant filter characteristics, and optical nonlinearities. We will describe the investigation of near-field phenomena in optical nanostructures under monochromatic and femtosecond pulse illumination, emphasizing the design, fabrication and testing of functional photonic devices.
