Abstract
Tailoring the light-matter interaction via proper design of periodic nanostructures is one of the most fascinating and active topics of current solid state physics and chemistry. The rapidly growing research activities in this field include in particular the development of photonic crystals. Here we show that a rectangular 2-D array of gold nanoparticles on top of a suitable dielectric waveguide leads to a collective interaction of the gold nanoparticles with light, resulting in selective suppression of extinction.
