Abstract

We report on a new type of optical reporter suitable for in vivo and in vitro diagnostics: molecular upconvertors. These reporters consist of single lanthanide ions held by a chelating ligand. These reporters have properties that are advantageous for use in biomedical diagnostics. These reporters have many of the properties of upconverting phosphors reporters1,2—no autofluorescence, multiplexing capabilities, no photobleaching, and excitation with compact and low power diode lasers—but in a molecular scale reporter.
