Self-focusing of ultrashort laser pulses in transparent liquids and multiphoton ionization

Abstract

The diameter of the (self-)focus resulting from self-focusing of picosecond pulses in transparent media is limited by ionization of the medium via an avalanche process.1 For femtosecond pulses, the limiting mechanism has yet to be determined experimentally.
