Abstract

Alterations in the photon density of states (PDOS) have been shown to have significant effects on the light emission characteristics of semiconductor lasers.1,2 Normally microcavities are used to reduce the PDOS, but resonances between light and surface plasmons can also alter the PDOS. We have investigated the coupling between surface plasmons in a thin metal film and the excitation of carriers in a single quantum well located neat this film.
