Optical Casimir nonlocality and size effects in second harmonic generation from Si (001)-SiO2 interface

Abstract

Zero-point fluctuations of the transverse electromagnetic field give rise to the long range (Casimir) interactions, which for example in the nonretarded limit are responsible for the van der Waals force. Recent high precision measurements ot the forces between an atom and a metallic or dielectric surface has renewed the interest in these fluctuation phenomena. However, Casimir effects may have much wider consequences.
