Abstract

Quantum noise behavior of unstable cavity lasers was first addressed in the theoretical work of New1 and Siegman.2 Briefly, an unstable cavity being a non-Hermitian system, the transverse eigenmodes are not orthogonal, which leads to an enhancement of the Langevin noise strength by a factor K ⪢ 1. This prediction has been experimentally confirmed by Siegman’s group.3
