Abstract
Interferometric measurements of a pilose-displacement in one arm of a Mach- Zehnder interferometer can be perfofmed below the shot noise level if squeezed light is injected into the unused '‘vacuum" port of the interferometer,1 The probe light is homodyne detected by a balanced detector with use of a local oscillator with the proper phase relative to the squeezed radiation. If the efficiency of the photodetectors is η, then we obtain for the measured minimum normalized quadrature fluctuations where Smin are the minimum normalized quadrature fluctuations in the squeezed state.
