Abstract

Nonlinear-optical techniques, particularly optical second-harmonic generation (SHG), have become valuable experimental tools in the study of surfaces. Useful analytical information about the surface depends on correct interpretation of the SHG signal. Knowledge of the phase of SHG is often very useful in this respect.
