Far-infrared time-resolved measurement of the TO-phenon free induction decay in polycrystalline GaAs

Abstract

Transverse-optical (TO) phonons and lattice vibrations in polar materials such as GaAs show strong infrared absorption and reflection around the resonance frequency. They form an example of an (an)harmonic ladder system in the solid state, in which the possibility of climbing this ladder in a sequential manner by using optical excitation accounts at least partially for the large absorption coefficients. In the past, time-resolved studies of TO phonons (and phonon-polaritons) have been mostly limited to Raman studies with visible-light pulses' because of the difficulty of obtaining ultrashort pulses in the far-infrared wavelength region.
