Lasing without population inversion in ruby by using low-frequency coupling

Abstract

We report experimental observations of field- induced transparency in a solid medium. Lasing without population inversion (LWI) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EMIT) can be realized when quantum coherence and interference are created in an atomic system. One requirement for quantum coherence is that the Rabi frequency of the coupling field must be larger than the linewidth of the transition. LWI and EMIT in solid media are complicated by the large linewidth of optical transitions. To create the coherence, large coupling power is needed, even at low temperature.
