Cross focusing in electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

Recently, within an experiment to produce electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT),1 we observed focusing and defocus- ing on the weak probe laser at separate frequency detunings within the transparency window.2 The mechanism for this is that the radial intensity profile of the strong coupling laser generates a spatial refractive- index modulation that is experienced by the probe laser beam. We have dubbed this effect "electromagnetically induced focusing" (EIF) and believe it to be of importance in the whole field of quantum-interference experiments, including EIT, lasing without inversion,3 and phaseonium.4
