Frequency conversion in passive InGaAsP/lnP waveguides

Abstract

Four-wave mixing (FWM) is an important technique for optical frequency conversion in WDM systems. It allows format-independent frequency conversion over large frequency separations1-2 and can be used for dispersion compensation by conjugating the signal at midway.3 Several recent reports 4-5 have described experiments performed in active semiconductor amplifiers. We have studied FWM at λ = 1.5 μm in passive waveguides. In passive waveguides6 the nonlinearity relies on virtual transitions and does not suffer from limitations imposed by the carrier-modulation time constant or the carrier-heating time constant.
