Abstract

Since the 1980's the polarization instability that is due to nonlinear effects has been observed in high- and low-birefringence optical fibers by several groups.1-3 We report on the measurement of intensity-induced polarization rotation and depolarization of linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses in short nonbirefringement single-mode optical fiber. The experimental results are consistent with the proposed theoretical model, in which the nonlinear polarization rotation is attributed to seif- and cross-phase-modulation processes in the optical fiber and the depolarization is due to rotation.
