Abstract

In the present work, laser oscillation without population inversion (LWI) is reported for the first time. Our demonstration makes use of non-inversion gain in a V-type cw amplifier. In order to obtain a clear proof-of-principle demonstration of LWI oscillation, we carried out a set of experiments which includes the observation of inversionless amplification of a weak probe light by a coherently prepared atomic medium, experimental proof for the absence of inversion, and, finally, observation of non-inversion laser oscillations in a cavity.
