Abstract

High-harmonic generation in molecular gases has been investigated recently. Krause et al.1 have calculated the harmonic spectrum of a stretched hydrogen molecule in a linearly polarized laser field. Theories of high-harmonic generation from diatomic molecular ions have also been developed.2,3 In this paper we present an experimental study of high-harmonic generation in the diatomic molecular gases H2, D2, N2, and O2 by using a 600-fs 1053-nm Ti:sapphire/Nd:glass laser and a 160-fs 800- nm Ti:sapphire laser. The rare gases Ar and Xe are also used in the experiments for comparison.
