Femtosecond transfer dynamics from π-Conjugated polymers into dopant-dye molecules

Abstract

Conjugated polymers have attracted much attention because of their potential application as very effective, cheap, and easy- to-produce luminescent devices.1-2 From the technological point of view, there is a strong interest in being able to easily adjust the emission wavelength of a polymer LED in order to make polychromie displays feasible. One possibility for controlling the emission wavelength is doping the polymer with other molecules.3-4 In this paper we report on our investigations of the energy transfer from conjugated soluble polymers poly-(phenyl phenylene vinylene) (PPPV) to the admixtured dye molecule DCM (4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-p- dimethylaminostyryl-4H-pyran). Varying the dye concentration drastically changes the dynamics of the transfer process, allowing us not only to observe the transport into the DCM molecules, but also to estimate the total trap density and to give further insight into the transport between polymer chromophores.
