Abstract

We have recently demonstrated that dark spatial solitons can write reconfigurable structured waveguides within self-defocusing nonlinear media and that these induced waveguides can act as low loss guides for a signal-carrying beam injected coaxially along the soliton.1,2 The importance of dark solitons for guiding light by light rests on factors such as their high stability, the existence of simple mechanisms for controlling their propagation direction, and their ability to write technologically important waveguide structures, such as adiabatic tapers, Y and X junctions.
