Abstract

We have carried out the first studies, to our knowledge, of the optical properties of honeycomb photonic lattices fabricated in semiconductor materials. Such lattices are predicted to exhibit a complete two-dimensional photonic band gap in the high-thickness limit.1,2 This band gap should inhibit the propagation of photons and spontaneous emission. Also, the lattice is expected to have unique electromagnetic modes and to serve as a novel medium in which to study the interaction of light and periodically structured matter.
