Optical nonlinear response of iron ions in glass matrices

Abstract

Recently, a large amount of work has been carried out to determine the nonlinear response of bulk and semiconductor microstructures1 as well as polymeric solutions and films.2 There still remains a lack of experimental studies on the optical nonlinear response of metals in dielectric hosts. Glass matrices doped with iron ions (Fe3+) are commonly used as neutral-density (ND) filters to attenuate the light intensity in the visible region. Each filter consists of a base glass with different concentrations of Fe2O3 (as high as ~5% by weight), resulting in iron ions (Fe+3) uniformly suspended in a glass matrix.3 Five optical ND filters (ND50, ND40, ND25, ND13, ND3), obtained from HOYA Optics, were investigated.
