Efficient collection of atoms by using optical trapping in a coated-wall vapor cell

Abstract

Collection and trapping of neutral, short-lived, radioactive alkali isotopes is of inter est for spectroscopy, parity nonconservation measurements, electric dipole moment measurements, and studies of (3-decay. Studies using these rare isotopes have been hindered by the difficulties of collecting and maintaining a large sample of these atoms. The high densities (~1010/cm3) and long lifetimes (~10 s) attainable with vapor-cell magneto-optical traps make laser cooling and trapping from a vapor an attractive technique for the study of short-lived isotopes. In preparation for trapping radioactive Cs and Fr isotopes we have investigated techniques for efficiently collecting ordinary Cs in a vapor-cell trap. The wall-coated cells being tested also have advantages for ordinary traps.
