Abstract

The synthesis and eharacterization1 of the C60 and C70 molecular clusters, which have the shapes of hollow soccer and rugby balls, have created much excitement and research activities in the last two years. The interest in the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the fullerenes lies in their unique structure and symmetry, which are responsible for the three-dimensional delocalization of π-electrons, a property often associated with enhanced NLO properties in organic materials. Our studies are focused on the NLO behavior of the fullerenes and their derivatives throughout the near-infrared2 and visible3 spectral regions.
