Abstract

We report measurements of the temperature in a one-dimensional optical molasses of cesium. Two counterpropagating laser beams with opposite circular polarizations (σ+) tuned 4-10 linewidths red of the 2S1/2 (F= 4) → 2P3/2 (F′ = 5) transition were used. After a one-dimensional molasses time of a few milliseconds, the atoms were dropped through a probe beam and their fluorescence was monitored. The resulting time-of-flight (TOF) signal was then fitted to a Gaussian profile to extract the temperature.
