Abstract

Associative ionization (AI) of sodium (Na + Na + 2hv →Na2* + e) is studied in new experiments in a switched magneto-optical trap (MOT). These experiments reveal new structure in the spectrum of AI versus laser frequency and point out the previously unappreciated importance of hyperfine structure in the reaction.
