Abstract

Using a newly developed technique that takes advantage of self-induced Zeeman coherences,1 we have studied the motion of stored ions in a Paul trap. We demonstrate the potential for measuring the complete spectrum of the ion oscillations consisting of the macro- and micromotion. The influence of the storage parameters and the ion density on the secular frequency is investigated with high spectral resolution.
