Abstract

We have observed transfer of both population [1] and momentum in a multilevel system by adiabatic following of a slowly evolving light field. This technique is useful in the realization of efficient, coherent, and large angle atomic beamsplitters and mirrors, and is especially relevant to the construction of atom interferometers.
