Abstract
Stimulated Raman scattering in the transient limit in which pulse durations are short compared to the material de-excitation time T2 (TSRS) has long been the focus of theoretical and experimental study. Recent experiments1 have observed pump depletion and amplitude oscillation, Second-Stokes generation imposed an upper limit on the length of these experiments, but it has since been found experimentally that it is possible to use a multiple-pass geometry to suppress this generation,2 allowing one, in principle, to observe TSRS over very long lengths. The equations that describe stimulated Raman scattering in H2 and other gases may be written after normalization as
