Abstract

Recently we demonstrated the use of whispering-gallery optical modes to form the resonant cavity of a laser. Devices showed lasing action at a wavelength λ = 1.5 μm in optically pumped In0.53Ga0.47 As microdisks at liquid-nitrogen temperatures1 and in electrically pumped p–n diodes at room temperature.2 We also demonstrated the use of directional-light-output couplers.3 In addition, we have extended whispering- gallery mode laser geometry from microdisks to microcylinders and have achieved lasing action at a wavelength λ = 1.0 μm.4
