Abstract

The emergence of ultra fast all-optical modulation techniques using reactive nonlinearities (additive-pulse mode locking, Kerr-lens mode locking) has opened the way towards a new femtosecond laser technology based on solid state gain media. The essentially instantaneous response of these novel self amplitude modulation mechanisms offers the potential for pulse shortening down to a few femtoseconds. However, several problems need to be solved before this potential can be fully utilized.
