Temporal structure of stimulated Brillouin Scattering in fibers

Abstract

Launching cw light into a standard silica fiber is a very straightforward experiment. It results in strong backscattering of deeply and irregularly modulated light caused by stimulated Brillouin scattering as soon as the input power is above threshold for that process. The structure and statistics of the back- scattered light have been reported to depend strongly on the amount of feedback present due to, e.g., a Fresnel back reflection at the fiber end1–3.
