Abstract

Mn-doped CaF2 is a widely used material in γ-ray dosimetry where emission is observed as thermoluminescence (TL) during the readout of a dosimeter. However, these dosimeters are known for a background problem in which high-dose readings may occur before exposure to γ radiation. This problem seems to originate from a TL peak observed1,2 at a higher temperature than the dosimetric peak. In a dosimetric-grade CaF3 that is doped with 3% Mn+2 Mn+2-Mn+2 pairing takes place. This may be the cause of the deeper trap and hence the background problem. In this paper, we report time-resolved fluorescence of paired and single Mn+2 m CaF2 excited by 337-nm light from a nitrogen laser.
