Abstract

This paper reports on a novel optical feedback method to control a semiconductor laser frequency by utilizing the velocity-selective optical pumping1 of an atomic resonance line in order to meet the requirements of laser cooling and optical molasses experiments. These requirements are: (1) lasing frequency υ should be stabilized and detuned from the atomic resonance frequency υr with detuning of υ- υr.≅± γ/2 (γ = natural linewidth of atomic resonance spectral line); and (2) linewidth must be narrow.
