Spin-flip-induced spectral hole burning of magneto-excitons in GaAs/AIGaAs quantum wells

Abstract

The density of states in a quantum well structure is fully quantized under a magnetic field parallel to the growth axis. As a result, relaxation of carriers or excitons between spinsplit levels can only take place via inelastic processes, leading to a substantial increase of the spin relaxation time.1 Using frequency - domain four-wave mixing (FWM) and selective optical excitation, we are able to probe for the first time the spin-flip transitions of localized magnetoexcitons and measure directly their Zeeman splitting.
