Interaction of ultrashort light pulses with periodic surfaces: enhanced local fields, anomalous absorptivity, deformation of the specular reflected pulse

Abstract

Methods for increasing the effectivity of light interaction with optical targets have been examined. One such method has been investigated in detail: the analytical theory of the ultrashort laser pulse diffraction from gratings. The method is based on the use of Wood’s anomalies and makes it possible to greatly enhance the local fields near the surface and absorptivity of the target. This facilitates the increase of the cross-sections of linear and nonlinear optical processes near the boundary and the increase of the ultrashort light pulse energy transformation into x rays owing to laser-induced plasma.
