Abstract

Synchronously pumped mode-locked In-GaAs/InP surface-emitting lasers at 77 K are able to generate picosecond pulses with an average output power comparable with that of dye lasers.1,2 Recently, mode-locked GaAs/AlGaAs MQW surface-emitting lasers operating at room temperature have been demonstrated with a linearly chirped output.3 In this paper, a more detailed experimental and theoretical analysis of the laser performance is presented, The origin of the highly linear chirp found in these types of lasers and the ability to adjust the chirp nonlinearity is discussed.
