Coherent push-pull transition for ultrafast optical switching

Abstract

Both low switching power and fast operating speed are required for optical switching. Usually, however, they are alternative properties. For example, real resonant excitation produces large nonlinearities and low switching power, but it also reduces switching speed because of the long relaxation time of the excited state. On the other hand, off-resonant virtual excitation increases the operating speed but increases the required switching power.
