Abstract

We have grown a series of multiple coupled quantum wells with a thin center barrier as a variable parameter [see Fig. 1(a)]. Rather than the usual1 Al0.3Ga0.7As center barrier, we follow the recent suggestion2 of using AlAs, Both electron and hole (heavy and light) states are split by the coupling through a penetrable barrier into lower-energy symmetric and higher-energy anti-symmetric states [see Fig. 1(b)].
