Abstract
Ti:sapphire lasers are now widely recognized as particularly attractive systems for the near infrared spectral region. The broad gain bandwidth of Ti-sapphire (Ti:Al2O3) means that in addition to its large tuning range it can support the generation and amplification of ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond regime. The mode-locking of such lasers has already been demonstrated using a variety of techniques including coupled-cavity (also referred to as additive-pulse or interferential), acousto-optic,1 passive, and self-mode-locking.2
