Abstract
Many-body studies of the gain spectrum and α factor have been inconclusive in several respects. In particular, including interference terms leads to divergences at the band gap edge if the electron and hole propagators are unbroadened. Conversely, neglecting interference while broadening the propagators instead generates unphysically large band-tailing. Previous analyses of the α factor in semiconductor lasers proceed in the latter manner1,2 and are accordingly based on overestimated electron and hole lifetimes.3 Alternatively, solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation with broadened propagators requires many approximations for the electronic band structure and the form of the Coulomb potential.
