Abstract

External cavity semiconductor lasers are ideal vehicles for studying complex dynamic effects such as coherence collapse, instabilities, and cha- Understanding nonlinear dynamic effects in semiconductor lasers is essential for applications such as high speed modulation, switching, bistability, pulse generation, linewidth narrowing, and fast reading/writing on reflective optical disks. Recent fundamental experiments demonstrating optical chaos have employed external cavity devices with deliberate tilt asymmetries.2,3 Such asymmetries have not been quantified, and their effects on the temporal and spectral properties of the laser are not well understood.
