Abstract

The interaction of alkali and rare gas atoms has been the object of considerable experimental and theoretical study. A principal stimulus for this research has been a desire to obtain a basic understanding of a wide range of elastic and inelastic collision processes involving these atoms. Measurements of the various processes (which include electronic energy transfer, fine-structure transitions, depolarizing collisions) have brought out the need for accurate potentials in the range of chemical forces for excited alkali-rare gas molecular states.
