Quadratic electrooptic modulation: A quick and simple method of measuring electronic third-order susceptibilities

Abstract

While third harmonic generation generally probes only virtual molecular electronic excitations, quadratic electrooptic modulation is sensitive to any mechanism that results in an electric-field dependence of either the refractive index or physical shape of a sample on times scales that are comparable with or shorter than the modulating frequency. These slower mechanisms include reorientational effects, sample heating, electrode attraction, electrostriction, and trapped charge. For the present studies, the host material is poly- (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and the dopants are the azo dyes DR1, DGV, and NFAI. Figure 1 shows the molecular structures.
