Abstract
We have developed a new technique for mapping electrostatic fields with unprecedented spatial resolution and have used it for fields of a few kV/ cm. The method exploits interference narrowing of linewidths or lifetime enhancement of Stark states. For alkali atoms at energies near the classical saddle point, electric field ionization occurs primarily by the coupling of quasidiscrete hydrogenic Stark states with continua.
