Light absorption in ultrashort scale length plasmas

Abstract

In the interaction of an ultrashort (less than a few picoseconds) light pulse with a solid target, a detailed examination of the absorption process involves considering the absorption of light in plasmas having scale lengths much less than a wavelength. Although the interface expansion which takes place during the ultrashort pulse may be small, expansions of the order of the optical skin depth or greater require a more detailed treatment of light absorption than given by the Fresnel equations for a step-function interface.1
