Laser cooling below the Doppler and recoil limits

Abstract

Laser cooling by the so-called Doppler technique was demonstrated a few years ago.1 The temperature obtained (240 μK for sodium) was in agreement with the limit predicted by a simple model based on a two-level atom interacting with a weak standing wave:
