Observation of anomalous collisional line shapes of Raman Q-branch transitions in hydrogen broadened by foreign gases

Abstract

Collisional shifts and broadening of H2 vibrational spectra by heavy rare-gas perturbers result primarily from elastic collisions that disturb the vibrational phase of the H2 radiator.1 The line shapes are usually modeled within the impact approximation, where the duration of the disturbance is assumed to be small compared with the time between collisions. If all radiators are assumed to move at the same average speed, the resulting theoretical line shapes are Lorentzian, with linewidths and shift parameters linearly dependent on the perturber collision frequency.
