Noise reduction in a Raman ring laser driven by a chaotic pump: numerical approach

Abstract

Conventional lasers are usually incoherently pumped. This, however, is not true for existing lasers based on the phenomenon of stimulated Raman scattering. For such a device pumping occurs with a coherent laser.1 it is interesting to answer the question of whether it is possible to achieve efficient laser action via stimulated Raman scattering using an incoherent pump. This question has not only a theoretical but also a practical interest, since some ring Raman lasers2 have very low threshold intensities that might be achieved by conventional thermal sources.
