Abstract
We have developed incoherent multiphoton techniques that use single-frequency cw lasers to perform spectroscopic studies on the triplet manifold of magnesium. Access to the triplet manifold is accomplished by use of a buffer gas contained within the vapor cell. It serves the purpose of collisionally redistributing population among the numerous velocity subgroups associated with the long-lived intercombination line. In this manner, the entire atomic ensemble can interact with a cw narrowband laser tuned to intercombination line thereby producing a large density of metastable triplets.
